Lucasfilm and Sony Pictures Imageworks release Alembic 1.0

Alembic 1.0, the Open Source project jointly developed by Sony Pictures Imageworks and Lucasfilm Ltd. was released to the public today, it was announced at ACM SIGGRAPH conference in Vancouver, British Columbia. Alembic is the computer graphics interchange format focused on efficiently storing and sharing animation and visual effects scenes across multiple software applications. It was designed to handle massive animation data sets often required in high-end visual effects and animation. Alembic is being offered via the New BSD License and is written in C++ and Python, leveraging the boost and HDF5 C/C++ libraries heavily, as well as OpenEXR. The code base for Alembic is available for download on the project's Google Code site and more information can be found online at alembic.io. [source]

In addition to previewing KATANA - their look development and lighting technology, originally developed at Sony Pictures Imageworks and due for release later this year (more) - and presenting the newly released RED workflow tool STORM (version 1.1, due this summer, is in development and will widen support for workflows including DSLR camera, QuickTime and ARRI media, Avid editorial integration and extended platform support to include Windows), The Foundry also presented the upcoming releases of NUKE, NUKEX and MARI.

The state of the art 3D texture and projection painting application MARI 1.3 brings a UV-less texturing workflow with the addition of PTex support, displacement preview using dynamic mesh tessellation, tiled textures with masking, as well as snapshots and environment mapping. 3D video compositing system NUKE 6.3 introduces a new Deep Compositing pipeline, allowing artists to work with deep data from 3D renders, supporting new ways to approach visual effects and more control when integrating and finishing CG rendered elements.
