eyeon goes boating at IBC 2011

Autodesk at IBC 2011

Lucasfilm and Sony Pictures Imageworks release Alembic 1.0
Alembic 1.0, the Open Source project jointly developed by Sony Pictures Imageworks and Lucasfilm Ltd. was released to the public today, it was announced at ACM SIGGRAPH conference in Vancouver, British Columbia. Alembic is the computer graphics interchange format focused on efficiently storing and sharing animation and visual effects scenes across multiple software applications. It was designed to handle massive animation data sets often required in high-end visual effects and animation. Alembic is being offered via the New BSD License and is written in C++ and Python, leveraging the boost and HDF5 C/C++ libraries heavily, as well as OpenEXR. AtomOS 2.0: An update for the Ninja
Atomos is pleased to announce the release of AtomOS 2.0, the next stage in the evolution of the Ninja - company's 10-bit uncompressed to Apple ProRes field recorder, monitor and playback device. Firmware v2.0 adds perfect playback of ProRes clips at the Ninja's full-screen resolution, touchscreen scrub navigation, shuttle controls, frame-by-frame advance and reverse, and more. Sony Creative Software announced the availability of Vegas Pro 10.0d. The popular Windows-based video editing application now includes improved closed captioning options (with the ability to read and write closed captioning embedded in MPEG-2), timeline burning to full-frame 3D Blu-ray Discs, support for AMD's ATI graphics chipsets using OpenCL as well as an improved track group workflow (more). The Foundry previews KATANA, and new releases of NUKE, NUKEX and MARI
UK-based software developers The Foundry previewed new releases of their high-end visual effects and CG software, at the 2011 NAB Show. In addition to previewing KATANA - their look development and lighting technology, originally developed at Sony Pictures Imageworks and due for release later this year (more) - and presenting the newly released RED workflow tool STORM (version 1.1, due this summer, is in development and will widen support for workflows including DSLR camera, QuickTime and ARRI media, Avid editorial integration and extended platform support to include Windows), The Foundry also presented the upcoming releases of NUKE, NUKEX and MARI.
The state of the art 3D texture and projection painting application MARI 1.3 brings a UV-less texturing workflow with the addition of PTex support, displacement preview using dynamic mesh tessellation, tiled textures with masking, as well as snapshots and environment mapping. 3D video compositing system NUKE 6.3 introduces a new Deep Compositing pipeline, allowing artists to work with deep data from 3D renders, supporting new ways to approach visual effects and more control when integrating and finishing CG rendered elements. Visual effects software company eyeon Software Inc. announced the latest release of their professional video compositing software, Fusion 6.2. The update contains a new Deep Compositing toolset-developed in tandem with Uncharted Territory for visual effects in Roland Emmerich's new film "Anonymous " (imdb; trailer)-that brings a new approach to generating volumetric effects and atmospherics, including the new Volumetric Masking Tool and Fogging Tool. In addition to these advancements, the development team at eyeon also implemented: QuickTime support for Fusion x64; Fusion x64 for Linux, which includes OpenCL Supercomputing; Particle System updates; RED R3D support updated to the latest version; SVG import; OpenCL improvements including a new Rays Tool and the ability to add a second low cost graphics card just for OCL supercomputing; and more. Atomos, manufacturer of the portable 10-bit Apple ProRes video recorders Ninja and Samurai, announced a range of accessories for these devices: a sun visor Atomos Sun Visor; Atomos EVF Loupe, an optical system that attaches to the screen and provides an apparent full-size image for assessing focus, depth of field and composition; and Cable Management System that attaches to the front of the Ninja and extends sideways to provide a latching system that holds cables in place.
