NewTek updated its 3D application LightWave to version 9.6 (see our
previous article for more information). The complete list of changes can be seen
here. Current users can download the update free of charge on
NewTek's Web site (requires registration), also available is a new
demo version and a preliminary version of
v9.6 SDK.

Trilian to replace Spectrasonics' Trilogy bass module in May

Virtual instrument plug-in developer Spectrasonics announced its brand new virtual instrument
Trilian, the long-awaited successor to the award-winning
Trilogy bass module. The new instrument has a larger core library and features highly-detailed new acoustic, electric and synth basses - as well as enhanced versions of the classic Trilogy sounds. Sporting a brand new user interface with numerous software innovations, Trilian is the first 64-bit native software based on Spectrasonics STEAM Engine and is the first virtual instrument to feature full library integration with the company’s flagship
Omnisphere synthesizer. Trilian is set to be released May 18, 2009 with an MSRP of $299 US / 229 EUR (all Trilogy customers will be able to upgrade for $99 US), and is compatible with AU, VST and RTAS hosts running on Windows and Mac OS X systems.

Cakewalk updates SONAR to v8.3

Cakewalk announces a free update for its Windows-only
SONAR 8 Producer and
SONAR 8 Studio DAW applications. The 8.3 update will be available February, 2009 as a free download for registered SONAR 8 customers and will add new usability enhancements (the ability to insert outboard gear into your projects with sample accurate delay compensation), engine optimizations (better multiprocessor load balancing), classic Roland sample content (original samples of the legendary Roland SH-101, TB-303, and VP-330, along with classic sounds of the Arp Odyssey, Moog Minimoog and Sequential Circuits Prophet5) for Dimension Pro and Dimension LE, drum kits for Session Drummer 2 (Roland TR-707, TR-727, TR-808, and TR-909 etc.), and

Steinberg announced a major new update to its Cubase and Cubase Studio music creation products.
Cubase 5 and
Cubase Studio 5 offer a host of new capabilities including new beat creation tools, an integrated vocal pitch editing toolset, extended composing features, a convolution reverb as well as
many other workflow and technological enhancements, including full support for Windows Vista 64-bit Editions. Cubase 5 and Cubase Studio 5 (feature comparison table between the two version is
here) will be shipping in February 2009.

Canadian plug-in developer Lumonix released its rigging and animation plug-in
Puppetshop for 3ds Max as freeware! Download the full version
here. According to Lumonix, the development of the plug-in will continue as usual and all current Puppetshop customers who have payed for their licenses, are offered a license of

Datamator (formerly Digital Anarchy Data Animator), a plug-in set for After Effects hosts, designed to create data-driven animations for news programs and corporate videos. Datamator includes a set of eight plug-ins that make it easier for videographers to create graphs and charts directly in After Effects instead of using PowerPoint or re-creating graphics from scratch. Version 1.5 delivers a new render engine that is more than 2x times faster than the previous version; better multi-core optimization; and support for Adobe After Effects CS4. Red Giant Datamator supports After Effects 7.0 - CS4 on Mac OS X including Intel Mac and Windows (XP and Vista) systems, and costs $99 new. Trial versions are available

GarageBand, and also includes
iDVD and an updated version of
iWeb. iPhoto ’09 builds on the ability to automatically organize photos into Events by adding Faces and Places as new ways to easily organize and manage your photos. iMovie ’09 expands on the fast movie creation features introduced in iMovie ’08 by adding new tools such as the Precision Editor, video stabilization, advanced drag and drop, and animated travel maps. GarageBand ’09 introduces a whole new way to help you learn to play piano and guitar with 18 basic lessons and optional lessons from top artists such as Sara Bareilles, John Fogerty, Norah Jones and Sting (more on new features

LightWave 3D v9.6 reaches RC status

NewTek announced that it is working on a maintenance release of its 3D software
LightWave. According to
this post on NewTek's forums, version 9.6 reached release candidate status and will bring many improvements, including better performance and reliability of FiberFX; animation cache, sampling and overall image quality improvements of Global Illumination system; new nodes and better performance of the Node Editor; Mac OS X version back in sync with the Windows release; enhancements to the SDK including the ability to incorporate external rendering engines as LightWave tasks directly; and more. Reportedly, this will be the last free update for LightWave 3D's v9 series.

Universal Audio updates UAD-2 Software

Acclaimed audio hardware and software developer Universal Audio released a new version of software for its
UAD line of signal processing accelerators. UAD Software version 5.2 for Windows and Mac OS X enables the UAD-2 DSP card to be used with Digidesign Pro Tools systems via FXpansion’s
RTAS Adapter. In addition to full Pro Tools compatibility, v5.2 now provides UAD-2 users with automatic plug-in delay compensation for Pro Tools LE via the bundled
Mellowmuse ATA plug-in (
more), and two new Powered plug-ins for the UAD-1 and UAD-2, the
Harrison 32C EQ and the
Little Labs IBP Phase Alignment Tool (
more). Harrison 32C EQ recreates the Harrison four-band 32C channel EQ plug-in derived from the prestigious Harrison 32 Series console, while The Little Labs IBP Phase Alignment Tool easily eliminates the undesirable hollow comb-filtered sound when combining out-of-phase and partially out-of-phase audio signals.
