HD Photo for Adobe Photoshop - a final beta?

Microsoft has released an updated beta version of its HD Photo file format plug-in for Adobe Photoshop. This release will expire after December 31, 2007, and includes all the features and user interface changes for the final release. It also has a new installer and some major architectural changes to improve performance and support for very large images. The plug-in will work with Photoshop CS2 or CS3 on both Mac OS X and Windows platforms. [source]

Fusion64 will be the first desktop compositor in the industry to break the current accessibility limit of 4 gigabytes of both virtual and physical memory. Software division of a VFX studio Frantic Films announced new 3ds Max particle plug-in: Krakatoa. Frantic Films originally developed Krakatoa for handling particle-intensive animations in the film Stay, the software was subsequently fine-tuned on Wes Craven's Cursed and Bryan Singer's Superman Returns. Krakatoa was designed to handle high-volume point-based particle scenes at high speeds and as such features: support for 3ds Max particle systems such as Particle Flow and Thinking Particles plus compatibility with CSV or RealFlow BIN files; full support for standard 3ds Max maps, materials, motion blur and DOF effects; parallelization via company's render farm solution Deadline (since version 3.0, launched last month, supporting Windows, Linux and OS X platforms, 64-bit systems and .NET 2.0 architecture); 64-bit build running up to twice as fast as the 32-bit version; etc. Krakatoa is available now for a list price starting at $495 US and is compatible with Autodesk 3ds Max 8 and higher. Mudbox HeadAutodesk announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire all the assets of Skymatter Limited (a privately held New Zealand-based company), the developer of Mudbox 3D modeling software. Skymatter's Mudbox software offers a 3D brush-based modeling paradigm, allowing users to sculpt organic shapes in 3D space with brush-like tools. Mudbox is used by leading visual effects and game development companies, including Weta Digital, Blur Studio, Cinesite, Epic Games, Pandemic Studios, and The Orphanage. The software has shaped photorealistic creatures for the blockbuster film King Kong, as well as upcoming films The Golden Compass, Fred Claus and Inkheart... Both SOFTIMAGE|XSI 6.5 Essentials and Advanced software will include more than thirty enhancements that were developed for key customers such as Lionhead Studios, Valve, EA, Animal Logic, Nerdcorps, Pandemic and NCSoft. Among the new features is a high dynamic range rendermap support; additional SDK APIs, UV editing enhancements; and enhanced audio support. Softimage also announced plans to repackage its Essentials and Advanced versions of SOFTIMAGE|XSI software: The Essentials version now includes Hair & Fur, and Syflex Cloth capabilities and its price will increase to $2,995 US, while the price for Advanced will decrease to $4,995 US. SOFTIMAGE|FACE ROBOT 1.8 will offer specific new features that focus on game development pipeline efficiencies, including Crosswalk, MOTOR (motion transfer), Delta Referencing and Animation Layers built on the SOFTIMAGE|XSI 6 core; a new shape rig export system allowing users to export entire head blend shapes for use in XSI and Autodesk Maya software; improved game export pipeline offering auto-enveloping, which delivers more accurate and higher quality results; and more training materials.
